We consider the problem of minimizing the total fuel consumption over a
standard (e.g. European) cycle, subject to legal limits on the total
emissions of pollutants (namely of CO, HC, NOx) and to drivebility limits.
The functions giving the rate of consumption and of emissions in terms of
the state parameters (speed and power) and of the control parameters (spark
advance angle, exhaust gas recycle ratio, air-fuel ratio) are estimated
by best fitting techniques (special software has been developed using sinc
functions and radial basis functions). The obtained mathematical programming
problem, a nonlinear problem of moderate size, has been solved using standard
optimization software. The results, improving on the standard strategy and
well satisfying the EEC conditions, are discussed.
